Planting Time and Methods for Ginger

Planting Time and Methods for Ginger

1. Planting Time: The planting time for ginger depends on the suitable temperature for its growth and development, which varies in different regions. The sowing period for ginger is generally late. In warm regions, it is advisable to sow in mid to late March, in mild regions, mid-April or later, and in cooler regions, early May. If using plastic film mulching for cultivation, the planting time can be appropriately advanced.

2. Planting Methods:

  1. Seed Selection: Before sowing, select ginger rhizomes that are flat, well-colored, have short and plump internodes, and are free from pests and diseases as seeds. Use 150-250 kilograms of seeds per acre. Any ginger rhizomes showing water stains, discoloration of flesh, or easy peeling of the skin indicate infection with rot and should not be used as seeds.

  2. Disinfection: Soak the selected ginger rhizomes in Bordeaux mixture (1.1:1:120) for 20 minutes or soak them in a solution of wood ash for 10-20 minutes to disinfect and prevent the spread of ginger blight.

  3. Seed Sprouting: Before sowing, sun-dry the disinfected ginger rhizomes for 2-3 days to reduce moisture content. When the ginger skin becomes dry and white, induce sprouting by placing the ginger rhizomes in a bamboo basket lined with straw and covering them with straw mats or straw. Keep them in a warm room. After 10-15 days, when the sprouts are about 1-2 centimeters long, cut the ginger rhizomes into small pieces, each with 1-2 buds, weighing about 50 grams, and dust them with wood ash for sowing.

  4. Sowing: Prepare the land by leveling and digging trenches. Make trenches 1.2 meters wide and 30 centimeters wide, with 3 evenly spaced planting rows per trench. After mixing well-rotted organic fertilizer with the soil, sow the ginger rhizomes at a spacing of 15-18 centimeters and cover them with 7-10 centimeters of soil. About 8000-9000 plants can be cultivated per acre using this method. This method is suitable for flat terrain and areas with a high water table, as it improves soil aeration, raises soil temperature, and prevents waterlogging.
