1. Postpartum Anorexia in Sows

Postpartum anorexia is a common disease in sows, with multiple causes:

  • a. Insufficient qi and blood, incomplete blood stasis.

  • b. Nutritional imbalance.

  • c. Postpartum fatigue, reproductive system damage, etc.

Treatment: Administer a muscle injection of 8 million units of penicillin, 4 million units of streptomycin mixed in 20ml of Anaine or a 20ml compound Artemisia annua injection, twice daily for 2-3 days.

2. Agalactia or Hypogalactia in Sows

To address issues with sow lactation, improve feeding management. During this period, feed lactation feed to stimulate mammary glands and restore lactation function.

Treatment: Use a Chinese medicine formula: 30g each of angelica, Herba Leonuri, Radix Bupleuri, and Rhizoma Gastrodiae, boiled in water, mixed with bran, and fed. Administer once daily for 3 days. Alternatively, inject 20-30 units of oxytocin intramuscularly once or twice daily. Feeding cooked crucian carp to sows also has a lactation-inducing effect.

3. Postpartum Constipation in Sows

Treatment:

  1. Feed green feed.

  2. Increase water intake and add artificial rehydration salt to the water.

  3. Administer 500-1000ml of glucose saline, 10ml of vitamin C, intravenously once.

  4. Administer intramuscular injections of 5ml compound vitamin B1, 2.4 million units of penicillin, and 30ml analgin.

  5. Administer 40 tablets each of yeast, rhubarb soda tablets, multienzyme tablets, and lactase tablets, ground into powder, and divided into 4 doses for oral administration.

  6. Feed 25g of sodium bicarbonate daily in divided doses.

4. Uterine Prolapse in Sows

Treatment: For incomplete uterine prolapse, inject 0.1% potassium permanganate or physiological saline into the uterine cavity with 500-1000ml to help the uterus recover. For complete uterine prolapse, wash the mucosa with 0.1% potassium permanganate or 1% saline solution to remove feces. Then, sequentially push the uterine horn into the uterine body, pelvic cavity, and abdominal cavity. After reduction, suture the vulva with coarse silk thread to prevent recurrence. If necessary, anesthesia can be administered. After reduction, inject antibiotics for anti-inflammatory purposes.

5. Postpartum Paralysis in Sows

Treatment: Feed 30g of freshly dried and ground livestock and poultry bones per sow per day. For severe cases, administer 40-80ml of 5%-10% calcium chloride injection intravenously once. Alternatively, apply high-proof liquor and perform manual massage. Adding green grass to daily feed also helps prevent sow paralysis.

Above are the treatment methods for common postpartum diseases in sows. Sows are the "money trees" of pig farms. To ensure the economic benefits of pig farms, sow management must be done well.
