How Often Should Camellias Be Watered?

Camellias are prized flowering plants with a long history in Chinese culture, originating from China itself. There are many varieties of camellias, and they are widely cultivated in China. Let's learn about how often camellias should be watered.

1. Watering Frequency

Camellias generally need to be watered every three to four days. When watering, it is essential to follow the "see dry, water" principle. If the soil is not dry, do not water as overwatering can lead to waterlogging, which can be fatal to camellias. Similarly, if only watering halfway, with the lower roots remaining dry, it is also detrimental to camellia growth. The frequency of watering varies with the seasons. In summer, watering may be needed daily, while in winter, watering once a week is usually sufficient.

2. Watering Methods

  1. Newly Potted Plants: When repotting camellias, ensure thorough watering to saturate the soil. The amount of water can be adjusted according to the weather, but the soil should always remain moist. During summer, extra watering may be required to meet the plant's sprouting needs. It's best to water in the morning or evening during summer. During the rainy season, attention should be paid to drainage to prevent waterlogging.

  2. Seasonal Considerations: As temperatures rise in spring, watering can be slightly increased, but maintaining moist soil is sufficient. In summer, besides regular watering, spraying water onto the camellia plants is beneficial for normal absorption. During winter, watering is generally done when temperatures are higher around noon, avoiding watering in the morning and evening. Pay attention to water temperature during watering and ensure it's not too low.

  3. Watering Time: Watering times vary depending on the season. In spring and autumn, watering is generally suitable throughout the day except in the morning and noon. In summer, avoid watering at noon and prefer early morning or evening. In winter, watering is usually done when temperatures are higher around noon, avoiding watering in the morning and evening.

Camellias prefer ample moisture and humid conditions for growth and dislike dryness. During hot and dry summer and autumn seasons, timely watering or spraying water is essential, with relative humidity ideally maintained at 70%-80%. During the plum rain season, attention should be paid to drainage to prevent root rot due to waterlogging.
