Causes and Treatment of Eggplant Yellow Wilt Disease

Causes of Eggplant Yellow Wilt Disease: This disease belongs to a mid-low temperature disease. It occurs more frequently when the temperature is between 19°C and 25°C, and the soil is moist or excessively watered. Additionally, factors such as consecutive planting, heavy and compacted soil, soil acidity, low-lying terrain, low soil temperature (below 15°C), frequent cold air outbreaks, improper irrigation, insufficient fertility, early planting, and deep planting can lead to poor growth and reduced disease resistance in eggplants, making them more susceptible to pathogen infection.

Symptoms of Eggplant Yellow Wilt Disease: The disease starts from the lower part of the plant or spreads from one side to the entire plant. In the early stage, there is a fading of green color between leaf margins and veins, gradually spreading to the entire leaf. The leaves wilt during sunny midday but recover in the evening; however, after several days, they no longer recover, and the plants become noticeably stunted. When the vascular bundle is dissected, it appears brownish, but no white fungal fluid is produced as in Verticillium wilt disease.

Treatment of Eggplant Yellow Wilt Disease: Upon discovering the disease, spray with Streptomyces lydicus at 90-150 times concentration and garlic oil at 1000-1500 times concentration, followed by root irrigation. Repeat the process 2-3 times with a 2-3 day interval. For severe cases, other chemical agents may be combined. Alternatively, use 10g of Qilongsu + 5g of Dichlorvos bactericide, dissolve in 15kg of water, and apply to the base of the stem before or during the initial stage of the disease. Apply 150-200g of the solution per plant, irrigate once every 5-7 days, and repeat twice.

Preventive Measures for Controlling Eggplant Yellow Wilt Disease:

  1. Use disease-resistant varieties.

  2. Promptly remove diseased plants to reduce sources of infection.

  3. Apply organic fertilizer and supplement with potassium, calcium, magnesium, and other micronutrients to enhance soil microbial activity and crop vigor.

  4. Disinfect seeds, seedling soil, and root irrigation with appropriate chemicals.
