Why Do the Leaves of the Peace Tree Turn Black?

The Peace Tree (Cinnamomum kotoense Kanehira et Sasaki), also known as the Taiwan Cinnamon or Lanyu Spice Tree, is an evergreen tree from the laurel family (Lauraceae). Known for its lush, aromatic leaves, it is often grown for its ornamental value. However, improper care can lead to black-tipped leaves, affecting its appearance. Let's explore the reasons behind this issue and how to address it.

1. Overwatering

The Peace Tree does not thrive in overly moist soil. When its roots are constantly in a wet environment, they can't breathe properly, leading to leaf blackening and drying. To prevent this, water the plant only when the soil is slightly dry. This helps avoid waterlogging and keeps the roots healthy.

2. Insufficient Light

Although the Peace Tree prefers partial shade, keeping it in complete darkness is not advisable. Lack of light can cause the leaves to turn black and dry out. Ensure the plant gets some sunlight each day. In summer, when the sunlight is intense, place it in a well-lit area without direct sun exposure to prevent leaf burn.

3. Temperature Issues

The optimal temperature range for the Peace Tree is between 5°C and 25°C. Extreme temperatures can cause the leaves to dry out and turn black. In the summer, when temperatures are high, mist the leaves regularly to cool them down. In winter, keep the plant indoors in a warm spot, ideally above 4°C.

4. Disease

Diseases can also cause the leaves to blacken. For example, if the plant is infected with leaf spot disease, small yellow spots appear on the leaves, eventually causing them to dry out. Remove the affected leaves and treat the plant with fungicides like carbendazim or triazole to prevent further spread.

Conclusion

Understanding the causes of black-tipped leaves in Peace Trees is crucial for effective treatment and prevention. By managing water, light, temperature, and disease, you can keep your Peace Tree healthy and vibrant.
