Planting Time and Methods for Garlic Seeds

In the cultivation process of garlic, seeding and propagation mainly rely on seeds, so it is crucial to master the correct planting time and methods. Let's understand the specific points together.

Planting Time for Garlic Seeds

The planting time for garlic seeds can be divided into spring planting and autumn planting. For autumn planting, garlic seeds are mainly sown from mid to late September to early October. For spring planting, garlic seeds are mainly sown from early March to mid-April. However, the specific planting period should be determined according to the local climate and variety.

Methods for Planting Garlic Seeds

  1. Selection of Seeds: For autumn planting, choose white-skinned garlic with good cold resistance, high yield, and long growth period. For spring planting, choose red-skinned or purple-skinned garlic with shorter growth period and relatively lower yield.

  2. Seed Treatment: Before planting, spread the garlic seeds under sunlight for 2-3 days, then soak them in clear water for 12 hours, and sun-dry them again for 1 day before planting. To prevent rot after planting, soak the garlic seeds in a solution of 500 times dilution of carbendazim for 12 hours before planting. This not only increases the germination rate and uniformity but also enhances growth and yield.

  3. Planting Method: Typically, furrow planting method is used. Dig furrows with a row spacing of about 10 centimeters deep. Then plant the garlic seeds into the soil with the cloves facing downwards, at a depth of approximately 3 to 5 centimeters. Cover with a thin layer of mulch, and then cover with soil to a depth of 3-4 centimeters.

  4. Proper Planting Density: Planting density should be determined based on the characteristics of the variety to ensure adequate spacing. For early-maturing varieties with shorter plants and fewer leaves, a higher density is recommended, with about 50,000 plants per acre, a row spacing of 14-17 centimeters, and a plant spacing of 7-8 centimeters, using about 150-200 kilograms of seeds per acre. For mid-to-late-maturing varieties with longer growth periods and taller plants, a lower density is preferred, with around 40,000 plants per acre, a row spacing of 16-18 centimeters, a plant spacing of about 10 centimeters, and using about 150 kilograms of seeds per acre.

In summary, the planting of garlic seeds should be based on the actual planting conditions, selecting the appropriate planting time and methods. Then, carry out tasks such as seed selection, sun drying, and soaking, plant according to the predetermined planting density, and sow them in well-prepared soil.
