With the arrival of winter, vegetables are prone to frost damage, especially freezing, which significantly affects their yield. To cultivate vegetables successfully, it's essential to implement measures for cold and frost protection. Let's delve into the techniques for vegetable cold and frost protection.

Outdoor Vegetable Insulation and Frost Protection Measures

  1. Focus on Insulation: Currently, for outdoor vegetables, emphasis should be placed on clearing ditches for drainage, reducing field waterlogging, and preventing crop damage. For vegetables prone to freezing and snow pressure, such as lettuce, celery, bok choy, and winter cabbage, use materials like non-woven fabric or shade nets to cover the surface at night or promptly cover with plastic arches to insulate and protect against frost.

  2. Greenhouse Vegetable and Seedling Frost Protection Measures

    1. Strengthen the Greenhouse Structure and Supervision: Reinforce the greenhouse frame with additional pillars, tightly cover the greenhouse film, tighten the film line, and hang straw curtains or frost protection covers around the greenhouse. Strengthen night duty to promptly remove snow accumulation to prevent greenhouse collapse.

    2. Enhance Insulation: When the temperature drops to freezing, cover the greenhouse with three layers of plastic film (large, medium, and small greenhouses). When the temperature drops to -3°C and below, cover the small arches with non-woven fabric, shade nets, or similar insulating materials at night. To protect seedling roots from damage due to low temperature and high humidity, electric heating should be applied to the seedbeds for night insulation.

    3. Balance Temperature, Humidity, and Light: Prioritize insulation when the temperature is low while considering humidity reduction and light exposure. When conditions permit, appropriately remove coverings from medium or small greenhouses, ventilate to reduce humidity, and maximize sunlight exposure.

    4. Disease Prevention: Under unfavorable weather conditions, weakened plant growth coupled with high humidity and poor ventilation inside the greenhouse can easily induce diseases. Use smoke agents for disease prevention, and foliar spray nutrient solutions to enhance plant resistance.

    5. Improve Drainage: Clear ditches around the greenhouse to ensure water drainage, lower the groundwater level, maintain smooth drainage, and keep the soil inside the greenhouse dry to prevent water accumulation.
