Seedling Cultivation Techniques for Yellowhorn Trees

p>The yellowhorn tree, also known as "Huang Bo Luo," is a deciduous tree of the Rutaceae family. It is also called yellow sandalwood, sandalwood, yellow sandalwood tree, or yellow Osmanthus tree. It has various uses, with its flowers, leaves, and fruits utilized in industries and cosmetics. The wood is tough and resilient, earning it the title of "king of wood." Below, we introduce the techniques for cultivating yellowhorn tree seeds.

Seed Collection

At the end of September to early October each year, when the fruit peel of the yellowhorn tree changes from yellow to black and fully matures, it is the best season to harvest seeds. After picking the berries, let them sit for at least 10 days. If necessary, they can be covered with straw mats. Crush the berries, manually or mechanically remove the fruit peel, straw, debris, grains, etc., and rinse the debris with water.

Sand Storage

Mix yellowhorn tree seeds with clean sand in a ratio of 1:3, then bury them in outdoor soil. The seeds can safely overwinter in the sand.

Seed Treatment

In the second year, 20-25 days before sowing, take out the seeds and soak them in warm water at 30-40°C for 1 day. Then soak them in a 0.1%-0.5% potassium permanganate solution for 0.5-1 hour to complete seed disinfection. Rinse the potassium permanganate solution with clean water, mix it with clean sand at a ratio of 1:3, maintain a water content of 60%, and germinate at room temperature. After about 30 days at room temperature, they can also be transferred to low-temperature conditions of 2-5°C. Seed germination is completed within 30 to 60 days.

Spring Sowing

Choose flat terrain with good drainage, good ventilation, and fertile, loose loamy or sandy loam soil for planting. In April and May each year, when the soil thaws and snow melts, sow the seeds. Create seedbeds with widths and heights of 1.0-1.2m and 15-20cm, respectively. Seeds with cracked germination are usually sown in trenches with a row spacing of 30cm and a depth of 5cm, covered with 2cm thick soil, and can be covered with straw mats to keep the bed surface moist. Seedlings emerge approximately 15 days after sowing, and seedlings emerge 20-25 days after sowing.

Weeding and Management

Do one weeding operation before seedling emergence and weed twice or three times in summer and autumn. When the seedlings are over 2 years old, reduce the frequency of weeding appropriately according to their growth. Loosen the soil during summer cultivation and weeding, and bury the weeds in the soil. During the seedling growth period, combine weeding, watering, and loosening operations.

Water and Fertilizer Management

Depending on the growth status of the seedlings, fertilization and weeding should be carried out simultaneously. Apply fertilizer 2-3 times a year, with a fertilizer dosage of 12-15g/m2 each time, and apply 4.0-4.5kg/m2 of livestock manure fertilizer or 2.5-3.0kg/m2 of livestock manure fertilizer after planting. Irrigate the seedlings usually in the morning or evening, but the water demand varies during different growth periods. From germination to planting, seeds should be irrigated multiple times to keep the bed surface moist. As the seedlings grow, the frequency of irrigation can be appropriately reduced, but each irrigation should ensure adequate moisture. In summer, irrigate appropriately and drain promptly when there is heavy rainfall. In autumn, as the temperature gradually decreases, reduce the frequency of irrigation. After the seedlings harden, stop irrigation or water sparingly to prevent root rot due to waterlogging and ensure safe overwintering.

Above are the techniques for cultivating yellowhorn tree seeds. Yellowhorn trees are positive tree species that can grow in forested areas and plains, and they have good economic benefits when artificially planted.
