Measures to Address Corn Waterlogging

Corn is one of the main grain crops. During the cultivation process, it is susceptible to abnormal weather conditions such as frost, waterlogging, and drought. Let's learn about the measures to address corn waterlogging.

Measures to Address Corn Waterlogging

  1. Drainage and Waterlogging Reduction: Monitor the weather closely and take defensive measures against disasters such as heavy rain, flooding, hail, strong winds, and lightning. For low-lying waterlogged areas, promptly dredge ditches, operate various drainage machinery, and quickly remove field water, minimizing the immersion time of the plants. At the same time, remove mud and debris from the plants to promote the rapid recovery of photosynthesis and physiological functions of the leaves.

  2. Cultivation and Soil Aeration: Waterlogging can lead to soil compaction and reduced soil permeability, which is detrimental to crop growth. Strengthen plowing to promote soil aeration. For plots with a seedling mortality rate exceeding 60%, timely plow and replant suitable early-maturing varieties, or switch to fresh-eating, silage corn, and other short-season crops.

  3. Fertilization and Nutrition Supplement: Waterlogged and flooded areas experience significant nutrient loss in the soil. Combine cultivation with timely fertilization. Apply quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer in a side-dressing method, about 10 centimeters away from the plants, and bury it in the soil in a timely manner. For areas affected by waterlogging and hail, promote plant growth recovery by spraying foliar fertilizers such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate, cytokinins, and growth regulators. In areas where conditions permit, combine with disease and pest control agents for multiple effects with one application.

  4. Disease and Pest Control: Strengthen monitoring and early warning of corn diseases and pests, and implement emergency prevention and control measures to effectively reduce damage. Focus on diseases such as anthracnose, brown spot, stalk rot, as well as pests like corn borer, corn earworm, and cotton bollworm.

In summary, after corn suffers from waterlogging, remedial measures should be taken promptly to minimize losses.
